A new law extends VA loan eligibility to more surviving spouses. This is the The Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act (H.R. 1627). For the widow/widower to become eligible, the veterans death doesn’t have to be duty-related. This is a very significant change in this law since only those spouses of veterans who died of military-related causes were eligible for home loan benefits. Now, widows are eligible if the veterans is rated as totally disabled.
Surviving spouses are eligible for VA home loans and may obtain government-backed mortgages for up to $417,000. This makes it an affordable option when buying or refinancing.
